JULIA & BRIAN | RIVERSIDE FARM

Paula and I just had to share this poem from Julia and Brian’s wedding in Pittsfield, VT from this past weekend :) By candlelight, in Riverside Farm’s Stone Cellar, John Oliver read the piece below... there wasn’t a dry eye in the room.

In Whatever Weather

For Brian and Julia on their wedding day, Pittsfield, VT 9-24-2011

I have seen what weather can do.

I have clear memories
of hot summer swimming mornings
with Brian in the gorge,
of the two of us basking,
lizard-like on rocks,

of the riverwater, icy clean and glorious,
running off us in droplets
and evaporating like every care
I had ever had.

The august humidity has baked
these mornings into me,
these moments of peace
with my friend.

Just to think of them reminds me
that I love him.

This is some of what weather can do.

And now come with me
to one of the few and fleeting times
I have ever truly known the color blue.

Think of Spring,
of that first ecstatic day
when the grip of winter’s
frozen fingers finally slips
and boom – with a sudden gasp
the world is nothing but birds
and buds and blooms.

Purples, yellows, ever imaginable green.

Now follow the sound of laughter across
a stone patio to Julia,
perhaps the first time I have ever met her,
amd watch her head tip back with the type
of smile that’s impossible in winter,
alive, bright, open
like every other blooming spring thing.

Look at her eyes turned upward,
teaching the sky to remember blue.

Yes. I have seen what weather can do.

But, too,
I have seen cold seep
into the hearts of growing trees
and have watched them burst
from the inside out.

I have gotten lost in blizzards,
and fog.

I have watched it rain,
and rain, and rain
until the very earth is
eaten away, and houses
are cracked open
and let to run on the ground
like broken eggs.

Yes. I have seen what weather can do.

And so have these two.
They have watched each other’s backs grow strong again.
They have held each other’s hands.
They have built a home, a shelter, a life.
They have built a love that stands,
no matter what weather can do.

Do you see how the looks they give each other
let in the light?

Do you feel how their mutual care
keeps out the cold?

Do you notice how the bricks
of their intelligence, creativity,
and generosity are cemented with
a mortar made of their own mashed-up
and acknowledged faults?

Even now, they have us here gathered
under their compassionate roof.

That noise is Julia doing goofy walks
in the kitchen and Brian laughing over
the soup.

Yes. In whatever weather,
I have seen what love can do.

Thank you, you two.
I am humbled, and awed.

Amy & Mike

“She has worn a wealth of costumes.. Hula skirt to wedding gown.. Lived in cities, walked through jungles.. Always sees the sun go down.. She is a hula girl at heart”

We were far from the ocean and the tailgating parking lots of the local amphitheater we used to frequent every summer. I didn’t have my crazy Parrothead hat or lobster claw necklace, but that didn’t stop Jimmy’s lyrics running through my head during Amy and Mike’s wedding weekend.

We’ve known Amy for a long time and couldn’t believe we were in Worcester to document her big day. All of the players were there and it was great to see everyone again! Amy and Mike brought huge excitement, smiles and laughter to the table and it seemed to be the theme throughout the entire weekend :)

Paula and I had an incredible time and it truly was a blessing to be witness to two people who love each other so much!

Amy and Mike thank you choosing us to be part of your beginning. Paula and I wish you many years of “Love and Luck” :)

We’re Having a Baby

It’s amazing the relationships you build being a photographer, not only with the couple, but their family and friends as well. Long after the wedding, many times, Paula and I receive a phone call or an email saying, “We’re having a baby!” We have to say it’s the best feeling being included in that special announcement :) We’re always in amazement when we hear the words, “Would you come to the hospital?” or “Would you do our maternity pictures?”.

We met Lindsay and Jason in November 2006 and later photographed their wedding in August of 2007. It was a beautiful ceremony tucked high a top a mountain in a cozy barn that had the most scenic views. The whole event, from start to finish, was truly them :)

Paula and I were thrilled they asked us to shoot their maternity pictures. Lindsay had specific ideas she wanted to try. She and Jason not only wanted relaxed portraits, but also fine art images as well. It’s wonderful when your subjects are just as excited as you are to try something new.

Their home was the perfect backdrop. We used mostly the living room area, as is, for the relaxed shots and a dark cloth backdrop for the fine art ones. Lindsay thought ahead and made available sheets, wraps, and even a gerbera flower, our favorite!

We were happy when we were given the “ok” to post. Paula and I were lucky enough to share just how beautiful they are as a couple... a couple ready to have a baby :)

LOVE IS SWEET: Shonda & Mike

Last year we saw so many couples on YouTube doing really unique things with their weddings. One of our favorites was the wedding party dancing down the aisle to Chris Brown’s Forever single. It still gives us chills today :) Paula and I had our taste of such a moment at Shonda and Mike’s wedding at the Killington Grand Hotel in Killington, Vermont!

The groom and groomsmen were in place and the bridesmaids started their procession. Shonda made her way down the aisle and caught Mike’s eye and there were huge smiles. Shonda’s dad gave her hand. Usually this is a serious moment, the couple is nervous, both turn to the officiant and the ceremony begins. Now, we said “usually”... Shonda and Mike are far from “usual” :) To everyone’s surprise, Mike reached into his pocket and took out a mini point -n- shoot camera. He whispered something to Shonda and then -CLICK- they took a self portrait! The ceremony came to a complete halt and the room came unglued with laughter! We thought, how cool is that! That was the best photo of the entire wedding! They’ll have that image for the rest of their lives! It’s something we’ll never forget.

Knocking it down, Killington style!

Shonda and Mike planned for extra time before the ceremony for extra pictures. With the additional time we had fun coming up with different shots :) I don’t think the gym will ever be the same!
